Property Description:
Take in the View, Take Home the Memories!

Imagine sitting with your morning coffee looking out over the splendid blue ocean and breathing in the clean refreshing saltwater air while enjoying the playfulness of humpback whales and porpoise as majestic icebergs slip slowly by or stand watch at the head of the bay, basking in the sun. You'll get all this and more at Pirates Peek Cottage and Aunt Reene's Place!

At Pirates Peek you will enjoy the spectacular, unobstructed, panoramic ocean view and beautiful vibrant sunsets from the large front deck, from wall to wall windows in the large living room, and from your bed in the master (queen) bedroom...all west facing.

Located just seconds away, you will feel you have stepped back in time upon arrival at Aunt Reene's Place. This award-winning, beautiful, 130 year old traditional Newfoundland two storey Heritage home has been lovingly restored with fine custom detailing and very tastefully decorated with a complimentary mix of antique and new furnishings and also boasts a spectacular ocean view with beautiful vibrant sunsets. In stark contrast to the high tech modern conveniences of today, it still has its various outbuildings which were used for farming and workshops and its very unique and rare rootcellar and water well combination located inside the house, truly high tech living in the turn of the century.

These cottages are tastefully decorated and furnished for comfort, convenience, and style and are fully equipped with everything you could possibly need in a tranquil and cozy home away from home.

Lounge upon the plentiful comfy furnishings while relaxing in front of the cozy inviting fireplace at Pirates Peek. Or marvel at the cozy comfortable old world charm and character that surrounds you at Aunt Reene’s Place...especially inspiring accommodations for artists, writers & musicians alike. As was the case for Percy Janes, acclaimed Newfoundland writer. Mr. Janes completed his wonderful book of poetry, Light and Dark, while residing at Aunt Reene's Place in the late 70’s & early 80’s.

Our cottages invite you to enjoy your morning coffee/tea and morning and evening meals on the private east facing back patio or the west facing front deck while keeping an eye out for whales, porpoise and ice bergs (June to early July most opportune time for viewing icebergs).

Pirate's Peek Cottage, with its fabulous ocean view, large fully appointed eat-in kitchen, large lounging area with generous seating, ample parking, and over 1/4 acre grassy outdoor recreation area, would also be an ideal location for outdoor weddings and group functions.

History:

Pirates Peek Cottage:
Pirate's Peek gets its name from a community legend which tells the story of how pirates once vacated the property. Situated on one of the highest points in St. Phillips with a panoramic view of Conception Bay, it offered an excellent vantage point for Pirates to keep watch of ships entering the bay.

The house, it is said, was built with pirate money and treasure and was constructed mostly of oak with window sills of marble. The original house was destroyed by fire on Guy Fawkes night in 1962. However, ruins of the concrete steps and pillars that once led up to the front of the majestic house still remain.

Aunt Reene's Place:
Aunt Reene's Place was built in the late 1870's by Leander Squires and has remained in the Squires family ever since.

In the early 1900's it was passed down to John and "Irene" Squires. This property quickly became know in the community as "Aunt Reene's Place". Irene, or Aunt Reene as she was known, lived here for 70+ years.

During her later years, she rented the house for a very modest monthly fee. In the late 70's, a middle age gentleman approached her and asked if he could rent from her while he built his little cottage about a half mile up the road. He informed her that he was a writer and was currently writing a book of poetry and felt that the "old house" would be a great inspiration for his poems which in turn would help him complete his work. Aunt Reene agreed to take him as her tenant and to that end, Mr. Percy Janes book of poetry, Light and Dark, was completed and published in 1980.

Aunt Reene (or Nan as we know her) continued to live here until her death in 1993 at which time she passed "the old house" down to us, Gilbert (her grandson) and myself, Shirley (Gilbert's wife). In her honor, we have retained the name "Aunt Reene's Place".
